As RSA Conference 2020 wrapped up last week in San Francisco, our team felt this year's theme, Human Element, sent an overarching message of unity: individuals we may be, but together we present a solid, yet diverse front to enable a more secure world. It was certainly an action-packed week of learning from expert-led sessions to keynotes on intriguing topics from security trends, team collaboration, and more. Here is a look at some of the takeaways we had from this year's conference.
Security Trends in 2020 and Beyond
The first day of the conference kicked off with the keynote speech from RSA Security President, Rohit Ghai. He stressed that three things were needed to alter the future of cybersecurity: scrutinize the stories we have, picture the story we want, and work together to provide a standard framework to achieve it realistically. He urged that cybersecurity strategies need to be prepared for what is likely to happen, not what will be most catastrophic. As active participants, cybersecurity leaders will be better fortified to eliminate the most pervasive threats. Ghai called these influencers the "zero-th line of defense."
Collaboration is Key
NASA astronauts Mike Massimino and Peggy Whitson, the first woman to command the International Space Station during two separate missions, emphasized the need for teamwork during their talk. Whitson demonstrated the need for cross-team collaboration by recounting the story in which the team needed to come together to repair an array that tore in space when being deployed. Empowering the unique thought process and diverse skillsets of the individuals who comprised the team created an atmosphere of innovation and allowed for the mission to be a success. Whitson accentuated the spirit of collaboration by declaring, "It's the human element that makes every group stronger."
Exploring Intrinsic Security
Patrick Morley, SVP/GM of Security Business Unit at VMware, Sanjay Poonen, COO of Customer Operations at Vmware, and Carrie Mills, Senior Manager of Cybersecurity at Southwest Airlines, discussed the value of making security more intrinsic within organizations and detailed ways to streamline security approaches. While issues within cybersecurity have innately become more challenging to solve, the goal should remain to work together to make security a fundamental aspect of the company's strategy. Teams that can't engage well cannot move forward, but by implementing positive relationships across groups, collaborations within organizations will lead to success.
Intel Security Day
Intel shared its security vision while unveiling new technology at an invite-only event during RSA 2020. The event brought together thought leaders, technology innovators, and partners to discuss and demo the latest security offerings and future strategy. As one of Intel's six pillars of technology, their commitment to security is evident as they look at enhancements from the edge to the data center and everything in between. Intel is building what they refer to as the trusted foundation for computing in a data-centric world.
