The new IBM z14 is the foundation of the new UNICOM Innovation Center

MISSION HILLS, CA – October 3, 2017 – UNICOM Systems, Inc. (“UNICOM”) today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement with IBM Corporation finalizing the acquisition of the newly released enterprise-class IBM z14 mainframe and DS8886 disk storage. The acquisition was completed on September 30, 2017, and will provide UNICOM’s global organization with access to the new IBM z14 mainframe processor capacity and required disk storage. A TS3500 Tape Library has also been added to provide support for regular data securities.

“This purchase of the latest IBM z14 mainframe to be sited at the UNICOM Technology Park I & II, Chantilly, Virginia, is the cornerstone of UNICOM’s commitment to supporting enterprise computing and the continued partnership with IBM,” said Mr. Corry Hong, Founder, President and CEO. “The new IBM z14 is critical to UNICOM’s continued innovation on Digital Transformation, Machine Learning, and Blockchain Technology initiatives. IBM Z continues to play a pivotal role in digital business with near 100% uptime. It is exciting to leverage the extraordinary computing power this server offers.”

The new IBM z14 CPU has 1.5 times more on-chip cache per core compared to the z13, and has new instructions in the single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) facility that speeds traditional decimal operation workloads and analytics. The IBM z14 features the next-gen CMOS chip technology with 10-core processors using 14nm silicon-on-insulator technology, running at 5.2GHz. A compression co-processor in each core has been improved to use fewer CPU cycles for compression/de-compression and DB2 will take advantage of that in the future. There are up to 170 configurable cores, meaning up to 35 per cent more total capacity in a single footprint compared to a z13.

UNICOM Technology Park I & II Innovation & Conference Center, which targets the federal sector, will showcase a broad range of UNICOM’s leading enterprise business solutions, including the recently released UNICOM Universal Gateway (UniGW®). UNICOM Technology Park I & II is a state of the art technology hub that also provides a forum for critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, engineers and partners to share insights and accelerate technology solutions in the public and private sector. Through collaboration with IBM, UNICOM will also demonstrate machine learning capabilities powered by Watson, with real-world use cases of emerging technologies in action, such as Blockchain for example.

UNICOM expects to continue its investment in R&D systems at the UNICOM Technology Park I & II Innovation & Conference Center over the coming months.
